Care and Cleansing of
Therapeutic Gemstones

Like all expressions of life, gemstones need and deserve care to retain their vitality. As therapeutic gemstones help us release energetic impurities and blockages, some of these released energies cling to the surface of the gemstones. These disharmonious energies quickly build up on the surface of the gems, inhibiting their ability to work at peak capacity. Regular cleansing clears these energies and restores the gemstones to their naturally vibrant state. Several minutes of care given regularly will keep therapeutic gemstones vital and ready to help us take our next step in growth and healing.

Basic Care Guidelines

When using a therapeutic gemstone necklace regularly, cleanse it at least two to three times a week using one of the following methods: Water Rinse, Salt Bed, Plant Rejuvenation, or Sunbath.

When not in use, store cleansed gemstones in a drawer, covered container, or jewelry roll.

Handle all therapeutic gemstones with care. Some are particularly fragile, such as Purple Rainbow Fluorite, Malachite, Mother of Pearl, and Rhodochrosite. They naturally break, scratch, and chip more easily than other gemstones.

To Be Avoided

Avoid storing gemstones near strong electromagnetic fields, such as those emitted by televisions and computers, which can disrupt the gemstones’ energies.

Avoid exposing gemstones to x-rays, such as at the dentist, in a hospital, or at an airport security station. X-rays will be absorbed by the gemstones and released later into the user’s aura.

Avoid wearing gemstones in chlorinated swimming pools or hot tubs. Chlorine weakens natural-fiber thread and adversely affects the surface of certain gems.

Avoid smoking and wearing synthetic perfume when wearing therapeutic gemstones, especially porous stones. The fumes can interfere with the free flow of a gemstone’s energy.

To Protect the Thread’s Longevity

Do not wear necklaces longer than 20 inches to bed. Instead, lay them within three feet of your body.

During intense physical activity, such as jogging, remove your necklace and place it in a secure pocket.

In general, be sure that the thread is completely dry before wearing or storing a necklace. For example, you can rinse a necklace before you go to bed and leave it flat to dry within three feet of your body while you sleep.

Four Cleansing Methods

Any of the four methods described below can cleanse therapeutic gems of the disharmonious energies they tend to collect during use. For certain gemstones, some methods are more appropriate than others; these special considerations are noted where required.

Water Rinse  Two to three times a week, or more often as needed

Rinsing gemstones in alternating hot and cold running water gently shocks the gems into releasing their accumulated energies and then washes these energies away. Hold the entire necklace under hot running tap water for about 5 to 10 seconds and then immediately switch to cold running water for 5 to 10 seconds. Repeat this process three to five times. To ensure that the hot water doesn’t become too hot, which can cause some gems to crack, test the temperature with your fingers. If the water is too hot for your fingers, it may be too hot for the gems. If you are going to wear the necklace immediately after cleansing it, end the rinse with hot water; otherwise, end with cold water.

After rinsing, pat the gems dry with a soft cloth or towel. Unless there’s an immediate need to place the necklace around your neck, lay it flat for at least several hours to allow the thread to dry completely. Putting a necklace with wet thread around your neck can stretch and weaken the thread.

Special considerations: Rinsing will dull the polish of Rhodochrosite, Lapis Lazuli, Malachite, Sodalight, Indigo, and Mother of Pearl. Therefore, use other cleansing methods for these gems.

Every three to four weeks: For gemstones that tolerate rinsing, occasionally use a small amount of mild, non-synthetic soap to remove body oils from the surface of the gems.

Salt Bed  Two to three times a week, or more often as needed

Sea salt absorbs the disharmonious energies that accumulate on the surface of therapeutic gems. Before going to sleep for the night, lay the gemstones in a dish or bowl of sea salt, directly on the salt. If possible, place the dish within three feet of your bed to maintain the gems’ energetic connection with your aura. Replace the salt about every two weeks.

Plant Rejuvenation  Two to three times a week, or more often as needed

Plants generate a living energy field that can absorb and transform the disharmonious energies we release. At the end of the day, wrap the gemstone necklace around the base of a healthy houseplant, or lay the necklace in its branches. If possible, place the plant within three feet of your bed to maintain the gems’ energetic connection with your aura. During the night, the gemstones will be gently cleared of any accumulated energies. For a deeper cleansing and rejuvenation, place the gemstones outside underneath or in the branches of a shrub or tree for several days.

Sunbath  Every one to two weeks, or more often as needed

Sunlight provides the deepest cleansing of any in-home method. Sunshine clears, energizes, and revitalizes therapeutic gems. Unless the gems are water sensitive, first rinse them in hot and cold running water as described above. Then lay the gems in direct sunlight for up to one hour. Ideally, expose the gems to the sun directly, rather than through a glass windowpane. If possible, lay the gems on the earth, grass (preferably untreated), or branches of a plant. On a cloudy day, gems can be left in the sun for two to three hours. Avoid excessive exposure to the sun, since this has a negative effect similar to that of sunburn on human beings.

Special Treats

For an especially deep and refreshing cleansing, you can use either of the following methods with any gemstone for which a water rinse is appropriate:

Streaming water

You can provide a gemstone necklace with a powerful cleansing and rejuvenation by holding or placing it in a natural stream or creek or in gentle ocean waves lapping onto the shore. Keep the gems in the water for up to 20 minutes. Be sure to secure the gems adequately, so you don’t lose them in the moving water.

Rain bath

Placing gems in the grass during a rainfall for several hours or overnight will also thoroughly cleanse and refresh them.

Air Travel with Therapeutic Gemstones

Airport security requires that all checked and carry-on bags be inspected by X-ray. When traveling with your gemstones, we recommend that you wear them as you walk through the metal detector or have them hand-inspected at the security station. Learn more

Cleansing Guidelines for Individual Gemstones

The chart below provides gem-specific details for the Water Rinse and Sunbath methods described above. Special Care notes indicate additional needs of certain gems.

Combination Necklaces

To learn how to cleanse a particular combination necklace (for example, Summer, Lavender Light, or Rubelle), read the care and cleansing instructions for each gemstone in the necklace, and then use the instructions for the gemstone with the most restrictive needs. All necklaces can be cleansed using the Salt Bed and Plant Rejuvenation techniques.
